Why Choose Meridian Fitness For Laser Treatments

What Is Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target hair follicles, reducing their ability to produce new hair. As hair grows in cycles, only follicles in the active growth phase respond to treatment, which is why a series of sessions, typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart, is recommended for the best long-term results.

The treatment is suitable for most areas of the face and body and can be tailored to a wide range of skin tones and hair types. At Meridian Spa, the Candela GentleMax Pro combines Alexandrite and Nd laser technology to deliver safe, effective, and personalized treatments. Before your first session, you’ll receive a consultation and patch test to assess your skin and hair, ensuring the laser settings are customized for optimal comfort, safety, and results.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits

Why Choose the Candela GentleMax Pro for Laser Hair Removal?

At Meridian Spa, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a medical-grade laser system designed to deliver fast, precise, and long-lasting hair reduction. Its advanced laser technology targets hair follicles while helping protect the surrounding skin, making treatments suitable for a wide range of skin types.

The system features a built-in Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™) that cools the skin before each laser pulse, improving comfort throughout the procedure. Most treatments are quick, require little to no downtime, and fit easily into a busy schedule.

Compared to shaving and waxing, the Candela GentleMax Pro offers a more effective long-term solution, reducing the need for frequent hair removal while leaving skin smoother. Book your consultation at Meridian Spa today to experience advanced laser hair removal with proven medical-grade technology.

The Science

How Laser Hair Removal Works?

Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (resting). Laser energy only affects follicles in the anagen phase, which is why a course of sessions is needed.

01
Consultation

Your skin tone, hair type, medical history and expectations are reviewed. A patch test is carried out to confirm settings.

02
Targeting

The laser is passed over the area in overlapping pulses. Energy is absorbed by pigment in each follicle.

03
Follicle Response

The absorbed energy damages the follicle's ability to produce new hair. Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks.

04
Course of Sessions

Sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart to catch each follicle in its active growth phase across the full course.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Most people need a course of six to eight sessions to reach the results they are looking for, with sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Some areas or hair types may need more, and occasional top-up sessions can help maintain results over time.

Most clients notice fewer, finer hairs after the first two to three sessions, with further reduction across the full course. Full results build gradually; this is normal and reflects how hair growth cycles work.

Individual results depend on several factors:

  • Hair color: Dark hair responds best to laser treatment.
  • Skin tone: Both wavelengths on the GentleMax Pro allow treatment across a broad range of skin tones.
  • Hormonal factors: Some conditions and life stages can affect hair growth patterns.

  • Recently sun-tanned or wearing a fresh spray tan
  • Undergoing active skin treatments in the area, such as recent chemical peels
  • Living with certain skin conditions in the treatment area

A consultation and patch test are always carried out before treatment to confirm suitability.

Who Laser Hair Removal Is Suitable For?

The Candela GentleMax Pro combines two laser wavelengths, Alexandrite (755nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm), which allow us to treat a broad range of skin tones, from very fair to deeper skin. The correct wavelength and settings are selected based on your consultation and patch test.

Laser hair removal works best on dark hair because the laser targets pigment. It is less effective on grey, white, blonde or very fine light hair, as there is not enough melanin for the laser to target.

You may not be suitable for treatment if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Taking certain medications, including some antibiotics and retinoids
Preparation & Aftercare

Before And After Your Appointment

Before Your Appointment

  • Shave 24 hours before: Do not wax, thread or pluck for at least four weeks, the follicle needs to be intact.
  • Avoid sun and sunbeds: For at least two weeks before your session, on the treatment area.
  • Skip fake tan: No self-tan or spray tan on the treatment area for two weeks beforehand.
  • Arrive with clean skin: No makeup, deodorant, moisturiser or perfume on the treatment area.
  • Tell us about medication changes: Anything new since your consultation, however minor.

Aftercare And What To Expect

  • Mild redness is normal: A warm, slightly flushed sensation for 24 to 48 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid heat for 24 hours: No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms or heavy exercise.
  • Wear SPF 50 daily: For at least two weeks on the treated area, even in cloudy weather.
  • Shaving only between sessions: Do not pluck, wax or thread, this disrupts the follicle cycle.
  • Shedding over 1–3 weeks: Treated hairs come out gradually. This is not new growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laser hair removal is a treatment in which a laser machine delivers heat and energy into the skin to target and disable hair follicles. It is important to note that hair grows in a cycle and that hair removal is only effective during the active growth stage. Laser hair removal is a life-changing treatment for many and offers a lasting reduction in unwanted body and facial hair.

Despite the many positive aspects of this treatment, there are things to consider before starting laser hair removal. Your consultation and patch test are vitally important to the success of your treatment course. Your hair must be checked to ensure it is suitable for treatment. If you have any underlying health or hormonal issues, these need to be talked through. Hormone conditions can affect treatment outcomes, so you must know this.

Not all laser hair removal machines deliver the same results. Our FDA-approved Candela GentleMax Pro lasers are clinically proven to remove hair.

Avoid sun exposure 4-6 weeks before and after treatment until your healthcare provider allows it. Epidermal melanocytes compete with melanin in the hair.

We may ask you to stop topical medications or skin care products 3-5 days before treatment.

Avoid bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for 4-6 weeks before treatment. The melanin-containing hair must be present in the follicle as it is the “target” for the laser light.

If you have a tan or darker Fitzpatrick Skin Type, a bleaching regimen may be started 4-6 weeks before treatment.

Recently tanned skin cannot be lasered! If lasered within 2 weeks of active (natural sunlight or tanning booth) tanning, you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment, which may not clear for 2-3 months or more.

One week before treatment, self-tanning skin products must be discontinued. Any residual self-tanner should be removed before treatment.

No, results from laser hair removal are not 100% permanent for the rest of your life. The reduction you will achieve is permanent, but you will see fine, light regrowth a few months after your initial course of treatment.

Most people describe the sensation as a warm snap on the skin, similar to a light flick from an elastic band. The GentleMax Pro includes built-in cooling to make treatment more comfortable. Sensitivity varies by area, the bikini area and upper lip tend to be more noticeable than legs or arms.

Most people need six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Some areas and hair types respond more quickly; others may need additional sessions. You will receive a personalised plan at your consultation.

Yes, but you will need to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning on the treatment area for two weeks before and after each session. If you have recently tanned or used self-tan, treatment may need to be postponed.

The laser targets pigment in the hair, so it works best on dark hair. It is not effective on grey, white, very fine blonde or very fine red hair, as there is not enough melanin for the laser to respond to.

Yes. The GentleMax Pro’s Nd:YAG wavelength is suitable for darker skin tones. A patch test is always carried out first to confirm the correct settings for your skin.

Prices vary by area, from smaller areas such as the upper lip to larger areas like full legs or full back. See the price table above for per-session pricing for women and men.

We do not carry out laser hair removal during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Hormonal changes during this period can also affect hair growth patterns.
